I am an artist, researcher, and the Studio Manager for the UAL Professional Practice Studios at Peckham Levels. I also work as an Associate Lecturer in the Fine Art and Design programmes at Cardiff Metropolitan University.
The professional practice studios are a relatively new project, and were established to offer students opportunities to engage with professional practice in ways that align with their goals and are meaningful to them. This has included exhibitions, workshops, shops, fairs, festivals, performances, and fundraising initiatives.
The studios are student-led platforms, open to the public and located in a creative hub surrounded by other creative businesses, where students take the lead in shaping the space’s dynamic. In my role, I respond to their needs and ambitions, which can range from securing financial support and creating networking opportunities to more individualised assistance, such as helping with job applications, PhD projects, curatorial ideas, offering pastoral support, and directing them to other UAL resources and teams that might be of their benefit.
I hope the PgCert will give me a better understanding of student experience, curriculum design, and pedagogical approaches to enable me to help students at course level and ensure that I can support their various activities and aspirations.
